Enter the End
Directed by Sonya Stefan, Steffé Castonguay
Logline: This 16mm experimental film explores plants using sustainable phytogram development and eco-friendly processing methods.
Synopsis: Enter the End is a short 16 mm film created by the Montréal duo Technologies of Consciousness, composed of Sonya Stefan and Stephanie Castonguay. The artists ask the following question: “Where does the conscience reside in the body?” Technically, Enter the End resorts to several contact printing processes (among others, plants for their photosensitive capacity and ability to generate phytograms) and alternative methods of film development (using various organic elements as developers for filmed images, within the photochemical process).

Director's Statement: Motivated by the porous and undefined intersections between art, media, and science, the collective seeks to define our biological consciousness through our shared potential to experience a deep and meaningful communion with the sphere of Nature. Driven by the spirit of DIY, their projects embrace a radical and popular view of non-expertise, demystifying the organic world in relation to the body's healing, processes of decomposition, and the notion of the end of the cycle.
The film is a collection of experiments conducted over the course of a summer. We explored a range of techniques, including phytograms made with plants gathered from our home gardens and backyards. We also experimented with eco-processing methods, using alternative developers such as mushrooms, moss, wine, and coffee.
