Mother Nature - 2026

Directed by Cooper

Logline: A hand-altered 16mm meditation where ecosystems breathe, resist, erode, and sing through nature’s hidden rhythms.

Synopsis: Mother Nature is an abstract exploration of the natural world and its ongoing struggle for survival. Shot on 16mm, the film uses texture, movement, and form to express the tension between resilience and destruction within nature’s fragile ecosystems. The film has been physically altered through a series of material interventions — baked in an oven, bleached, hand-painted, and scratched — transforming the celluloid itself to mirror the erosion, violence, and beauty found in nature’s own processes. The experimental soundtrack was created by capturing the hidden sounds of plants through sensitive microphones, amplifying the subtle vibrations and internal rhythms of organic life.

Director's Statement: Mother Nature is a tactile meditation on the fragile balance between resilience and destruction within the natural world. Working on 16mm allows the film to exist as a living surface—one that can be baked, bleached, painted, and scarred—mirroring the forces of erosion, violence, and beauty that shape our ecosystems. These material interventions form the film’s language, where decay and transformation become acts of storytelling.

At the center of the film is a single flower, returned to repeatedly as a quiet symbol of endurance. As the surrounding landscapes fracture and burn, the flower remains—fragile in appearance yet resilient in spirit—anchoring the film’s cyclical structure. The imagery moves toward a field hand-painted in yellow and red, evoking the increasing presence of wildfires across the planet. The final image returns once more to the flower: unburned, standing tall, and persistent. Paired with an experimental soundtrack drawn from the hidden vibrations of plant life, the film listens to nature as much as it observes it, reflecting survival not as spectacle, but as quiet resistance.
